Baracoa's farmers, immersed in the recovery of the main agricultural lines after the damage of Hurricane Matthew in October of 2016 obtained significant results this year.
In the closing year the cocoa growers of the first village founded in Cuba rescued more than 2000 hectares of the 3000 affected by the aforementioned meteorological event, planted more than 200 hectares and intend to exceed the 800 tons in the collection of the acorn.
In turn, they recovered nurseries and plantations with the use of new technologies such as micro-grafts, clonal banks and tube nurseries, in search of higher quality postures.
According to the engineer Alexis Toirac Perera, General Director of the Agroforestry and Coconut Company in Baracoa, they managed to plant the 150 hectares of coffee planned for the final stage and recovered the infrastructure of the nurseries, at the same time they started grafting to obtain the desired varieties.
The executive said that in the same period Baracoa´s producers planted some 3000 hectares of coconut, a real feat to eliminate the remains of Matthew and show the dedication of rural men and women.
