Quality Cuban Education in Valleys and Hills, despite Helms Burton Law

Guantanamo StudentsOf the 774 Guantanamo schools that welcomed their students at the beginning of the new course, more than half are located in areas of the so-called Turquino Plan, and guarantee free and quality education to children in the mountains of this province, the of largest mountainous area of the country.

For the pioneers of those parts, who generally walk along roads between the hills and streams to reach the school, the beginning of the course is important for them, for the joy of starting in the world of knowledge, or meeting their classmates and the teacher that in intricate and sparsely populated areas often opens the doors to recieve only 10 or fewer students.

This is the case of several Guantanamo people dedicated to the beautiful work of teaching, such as Ramón Guzmán, from the Patana town, in the easternmost municipality Maisí, who received his six primary level students, a teaching level that opened about 600 schools in the province, five more than in the previous course, responding to the demographic dynamics in mountainous areas, of agricultural development interest.

Despite the economic limitations imposed by the immoral Yankee blockade against Cuba, these mountain institutions, as well as those in urban regions, have the necessary material and human resources to guarantee teacher efficiency, thanks to the effort of the revolutionary Government, which gives priority to the education of their children in every corner of the archipelago.

In difficult-access areas, children with physical or intellectual disabilities receive freely and highly- level special pedagogical and therapeutic treatment, including those with particular problems to attend the campuses, assisted by about thirty itinerant teachers.

In places where the National Electroenergetic System does not reach, the schools have photovoltaic panels, technology that transforms the sun's light energy into electricity and allows the artificial lighting of the centers and the operation of equipment and media.

More than 89,400 students from all over Guantanamo are already in the classrooms, as are their more than 10,600 educators, a hundred percent teacher availability, which ratifies the teaching force of the territory among the most stable in the country.

Raquel Laviste, provincial director of Education, stressed that expectations aim to get or exceed the achievements of the previous academic period, raise the quality of comprehensive training of students improving what has already been achieved, consistent goal for this region that for four years is among the most prominent of the national education system.
