A giant "rueda de casino," a Cuban choreography in which pairs of dancers dance salsa music in a circle, brought together here today about 964 people at an esplanade known as La Piragua in the Havana seawall, who danced in unison for 14.58 minutes, to try to set a world record.

Although they will have to wait a few days for the results, the 482 pair of dancers participating in this event were challenged to dance without making a mistake, in what became a party for love and worship to this musical genre.

Students, professionals and fans from all over the country joined those attending from 16 other nations of several generations in an attempt for surpassing the record achieved in 2014 in Greece, where 1,102 people danced in a similar "rueda de casino" for 7.16 minutes.

Dressed in red, participants showed off dancing to the rhythm of four Cuban songs, while Barbara Barbueno, of the Higher Institute of Art, and Juan Gomez, founder of "rueda de casino" in Cuba, as witnesses, followed every step.

Among many groups, we could see young and older people, such as a 70-year woman, from Martinique, whose peculiar way of dancing captured the eyes of spectators.

The "rueda de casino" was guided by about 20 callers, who were responsible for the cleaning of those steps and the coordination of dancers to achieve a unity.

The giant "rueda de casino" is part of the celebrations for the 10th anniversary of the "Baila en Cuba" festival, in which salsa and casino dance academies worldwide meet every year.
