Nicolas Guillen Colloquium in Cuba Attracts Foreign Intellectuals

Scheduled from March 22 to 24, the event will also gather national speakers, including doctors María del Carmen Barcia and Reynaldo Sanchez Porro, and poet and researcher Waldo Leyva.

On the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the slavery abolition in Cuba, the Nicolas Guillen Foundation proposes using the event as the perfect space for the exchange of ideas about the history and culture of the African continent since the days of the slave trade to the present day.

Music recitals, poetry readings and exhibitions will take place in Havana during the celebration, which will also commemorate the five decades of the publication of Biography of a Runaway Slave, a testimony novel written by Cuban Miguel Barnet.

The reflection of the African heritage in Guillen's work and thought and the cultural contributions of the peoples of Africa will lead the event named after the national poet of Cuba, author of the texts Motivos de Son and Sóngoro Cosongo, among others.

In the musical program of the10th Nicolas Guillen International Music and Poetry Festival and Colloquium will participate the Schola Cantorum Coralina led by Professor Alina Orraca, Cuban pianist Jorge Luis Prats and flutist and director of the group NG La Banda, José Luis Cortés.
