The experienced dancer Rubén Rodríguez, a star of dance in Cuba, performed in Guantanamo a unique program, as part of the season on the 25 years of the company Danza Fragmentada, an emblematic troupe of Guantanamo Province.
Last night at the Guaso Theater of this city, Rubén Rodríguez, of 61 years old, who was for many years (1977-1990) the first Cuban National Dance dancer and a well-kown for his role as Michelangelo in the master piece of Víctor Cuéllar, showed his vitality and quality of interpretation, stood the test of time, in the choreography Canta ruiseñor, inspired by theatrical lyrical piece of the great Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona.
Students of the Guantanamo Dance Professional School and the local company Danza Fragmentada began the show that was brilliantly closed with the performance of Rodríguez, cheered by the public and honored by the cultural sector for his participation in the event, his career and contribution to Cuban modern dance, and his coming 50 years of career.
During the week the famous dancer of El cruce sobre el Niagara (1987) -a master piece in the history of Cuban dance-, has shared in Guantanamo also his wisdom and pedagogy, in several workshops and classes of contemporary style and ballet, to students from the province and professional dancers at the Fragmentada’s studio.
In a meeting with local directors of companies and performing arts specialists, Rubén Rodríguez referred to the need to encourage choreographic creation in young dancers, and called to revive the Cuban school of contemporary dance, to preserve its distinctive expressive richness, and maintain the tradition and legacy of so many great teachers as Ramiro Guerra, Eduardo Rivero, Marianela Boan and the North American Elfriede Malher.
After conferences, workshops and shows, this Friday concludes the first part of the season on the 25th anniversary of Danza Fragmentada, a celebration that this year was conceived in two stages, and in the second, from 11 to 14 October, will be included in the frame of the Cuban Culture Day and the program will also include prominent guests and several performances with premier, theoretical spaces and tributes.
