"I am impressed with the dance phenomenon in Guantanamo," Rubén Rodríguez, first Cuban dancer, teacher and choreographer, said after sharing this week with students and local professional dancers.
This city, in addition to good dancers, has great choreographers, a powerful movement and a large and quality student body, Rubén said, who was invited to Danza Fragmentada Company’s season in Guantanamo after arriving from the V Grand Prix Vladimir Malakhov, in Holguin, where he also appreciated the performance of the Guantanamo dancers and the prestige of the movement.
During his five days in Guantanamo, the mythical interpreter of Michelangelo (1979) -a classic of dance on the island-, taught contemporary style, composition and improvisation to the students of the Provincial Dance School and professionals at Danza Fragmentada’s studio, a company that is celebrating its 25 anniversary of foundation and promoted these exchanges, shows and tributes.
"I'm really happy and with the promise to return, because I really want to contribute and, within the possibilities, continue to support the dance and the motivation for the choreographic creation in Guantanamo,” the dancer- who was for many years (1977-1990) first dancer of National Dance of Cuba- told to ACN and local cultural directors.
Today, Rodriguez, of 61 years-old, and close to celebrating his half-century in the artistic world, assumes with equal dedication his pedagogical vocation, to reciprocate - he says - artistic education on the Island and contributes to the defense of the Cuban technique of contemporary dance.
