National Literature Prize laureate Leonardo Padura will be awarded the Honorary Prize Foundation of the City of Matanzas in a literary event dedicated to him, scheduled for October 9-11.

National Literature Prize laureate Leonardo Padura will be awarded the Honorary Prize Foundation of the City of Matanzas in a literary event dedicated to him, scheduled for October 9-11.

The tribute is included in the program of yearly celebrations in the city, known since the 19th Century as "the Athens of Cuba", 100 kms east of Havana.

The 322nd anniversary of the foundation of Matanzas is on October 12.

Editor of Ediciones Matanzas publishing house, Norge Cespedes, told Prensa Latina that previous laureates with the Honorary Prize Foundation of the City of Matanzas include Cuban writers Roberto Fernandez Retamar, Anton Arrufat, Nancy Morejon and Reynaldo Gonzalez.

He said a colloquium will be held on Padura's works, as he is "one of the most relevant contemporary Cuban writers, with a solid and internationally acclaimed work including novels, stories, essays and journalism.

Cespedes announced ther screening of the film "Regreso a Itaca" by French director Laurent Cantet, of which Padura was co-scriptwriter, based on his book "La Novela de Mi Vida."

The event will also be dedicated to the province of Holguin (in eastern Cuba),he said.
