Life expectancy in patients diagnosed with breast cancer in Guantanamo has increased on average of more than seven years after cancer detection and treatment at the province´s General Hospital, a significant achievement in the territory where such a disease ranks second regarding women´s cause of death.
Created in 1992 the mastology multidisciplinary consultation achieved a comprehensive assessment for women who come to the office with a breast abnormality, which enables the application of a therapy with curative intent in a larger number of cases, according to Dr. Lazaro David Cardona, head of this service in the eastern territory.
The specialist said that since 2012 new treatments of domestic production are being used in the medical institution, such as second-line drugs and the inclusion of patients in clinical trials for vaccine products which are free and result in better quality of life for patients.
A dozen women receive daily cytostatic treatment at the largest institution in the province in a heated and comfortable room, assisted by more than 15 nurses and clinicians, guaranteeing the care and security required by this healing process.
During the last five years it has been the trend in Guantanamo the reduction of cases of breast cancer diagnosed in advanced stages thanks to education and prevention work of the health areas, consultations in clinics and the integrated oncologic care.
