The increase of the purchase price to the producer, the greater availability of resources and improved performance of state-owned specialized enterprises have led good harvests in recent years (including historical record in 2014, with just over 1 550 tons) and that, in turn, the growing cultivation of cocoa among farmers in Baracoa area.
According to the information provided by Michel Vilches Gomez, head of the Registry of Land Tenure and Tractors in the town, there are 57 growers favored, of which 12 received their areas so far in 2016.
The specialist argued that his entity processes new applications and the plots were granted primarily on the production region San Luis-Jamal-Güirito-Mosquitero-Sabanilla, the largest in the country.
Cocoa is one of the two typical crops of Baracoa (the other is the coconut), where about 75% of the country's plantations are located. Its exquisite taste and nutritional properties will ensure wide use in the manufacture of chocolate, ice cream, candy and confections in Cuba and abroad.
By Decree-Law 300 in Baracoa, 56 other farms were also delivered for the production of coconut, 37 for multiple crops and 16 for coffee as well as minor amounts of land for fruit, small livestock and forestry.
