A US delegation presided over by Ambassador Daniel A. Sepulveda, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and US Coordinator for International Communications and Information Policy in the State Department´s Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs (EB), concluded a visit to Cuba on Saturday.
A US delegation presided over by Ambassador Daniel A. Sepulveda, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and US Coordinator for International Communications and Information Policy in the State Department´s Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs (EB), concluded a visit to Cuba on Saturday.
The group was also led by Thomas Wheeler, president of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), according to a press release published here.
Both officials were accompanied by officials from the departments of State, Commerce and Treasury, and the FCC. The delegation was also made up of representatives of telecommunications companies.
During their three-day stay in Cuba, the visitors were welcomed by Deputy Communications Minister Jorge Luis Perdomo Di-Lella, as well as by officials from that ministry and the ministries of Foreign Affairs, and Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, business representatives and Cuban academics working in this area.
During the meeting, which gave continuity to one held in March 2015 and took place in a positive atmosphere, views on the use of the Internet for economic and social development and the regulatory framework for its use were exchanged.
The effects of the blockade in the field of telecommunications, including the difficulties Cuba has to face to have access to US Internet sites that are key to its scientific-technical and economic development, was also discussed, as well as the scope and limitations of the new regulations adopted by the US government for the sector.
The delegation was also received at the ministries of Foreign Affairs, and Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, and visited facilities of the youth Computing clubs, the "Jose Antonio Echeverria" Higher Polytechnic Institute and the University of Computer Sciences, where they exchanged with students and teachers.
