The interest of Jose Marti for Guantanamo dates back from 1880 in New York, when he referred in his letters, patriots of the territory, such as Silverio del Prado and Mr. Amador Esteva Mestre, who was asked to distribute 20 copies of first issue of his Golden Age magazine.

Likewise he recognized the consolidated work of conspiratorial movements in Baracoa, the first village of Cuba.

History also includes the events that marked its presence in the easternmost part of the Cuban archipelago, since his disembark along Maximo Gomez and other patriots, in the convulsed waters of the south eastern coast. Cajobabo Beach was the point of arrival and traced the route of glory where they pilgrimaged and today as a tribute, a group of young followers of Marti´s doctrines reissue the event each year.

Jose Marti never imagined the hardships he had to face during his journey through the 27 places where he camped up to his arrival in Dos Rios.

Jose Marti was the Cuba's most wanted fighter inside and outside the country, as organizer of the Necessary War. The mambi fighter Inocencia  Araujo saved his life in the battle of Arroyo Hondo, a real human carnage, where the Spanish troops tried to bring down the insurgent forces.

Here, the most universal of all Cubans, loved nature like nobody else upon contemplating the most beautiful landscapes, and records his experience in his diary. He also reflects moments full of love and tenderness toward residents like Salustiano Leyva and his family in Cajobabo, who sheltered him, after arriving on April 11.

Guantanamo saw the growth of Jose Marti, the delegate to the Cuban Revolutionary Party, the poet, the thinker and military strategist when he received the grade of Major General of the Liberation Army by hands of General Maximo Gomez here, a land that marked the beginning of the stage emancipation for the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean.
