The area is considered one of the 200 counties worldwide well-preserved globally, said the MSc. Mario Campeyo Montero, who was former representative of Cuba to the World Convention to Combat Desertification.
The expert specified that these mountains saved in only seven percent of Cuba surface, the greater diversity of typical landscapes and vegetation of the Caribbean islands.
He mentioned among its priceless treasures the large reserves of fresh water and better preserved than those of the Amazon, thanks to the work of experts, researchers and rangers of Guantanamo Provincial Environmental Services Unit Alejandro de Humboldt tropical rainforests.
According to the late Cuban scientist Antonio Núñez Jiménez, the tropical rainforestof the Toa basin are considered the largest factory of water for Cuba, as well as tropical hurricanes that hit it.
These mountains, the roughest of the national territory that extend from Nipe, Holguin, until Maisi’s marine terrace, treasure the largest coffee plantations in the island, and the only important area for the production of cocoa and coconut.
Its rich biodiversity has been praised by the international NGO Conservation (IC acronym), founded in 1987, in order to maintain the natural heritage of the earth, so that future generations are to thrive spiritually, culturally and economically.
This Cuban mountainous area also has endangered species in the Caribbean island, its first center evolution of the flora of Cuba, a biosphere reserve of strategic minerals too.
