Some 50 congenital malformations incompatible with life were diagnosed this year in Guantanamo thanks to comprehensive studies done on women of childbearing age and pregnant women at the Provincial Center of Genetics, an achievement that avoided the complications of neonatal or maternal death before these cases.
The specialist in clinical genetics Kilenda Peñalver Morales told CMKS that the diagnosis of chromosomal abnormalities by cytogenetics is one of the programs that show better results when analyzing embryonic development to cellular levels, which reveals defects as Dawn syndrome.
The network of provincial genetics in Guantanamo also guarantees the performance of ultrasound to pregnant women every three month, which can detect abnormalities in the formation of the fetus and alert on some health problems.
These tests are performed with the help of professionals that use advanced technology equipment, available in each municipality of the province. The performance of tests also depends on the responsibility of family doctors and pregnant women who have to attend consultations at the time indicated.
With a reliability of 95 percent, genetic studies in Guantanamo, minimize risks during pregnancy and can warn women and the family to birth defects that require medical care at the time of delivery to ensure greater survival and gestational quality.
