About 300 Guantanamo school athletes are ready to departure on Monday and defend the colors of the easternmost territory of Cuba in the 51st National School Games.
At the Pioneers Cup, the athletes will compete in athletics, boxing, diving, artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, judo, wrestling, synchronized swimming, swimming, taekwondo, volleyball and canoeing (Student League) and only the Guantanamo participants will not compete in diving and synchronized swimming.
In the qualifying stage, the teams of baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, handball, women's softball and men's and women's volleyball will attempt to qualify amongst finalist.
The youngsters will strive for achieving a good place in the men’s and women’s basketball, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, karate, freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, basque ball, softball (women), tennis, sailing, beach volleyball, skating and male and female volleyball.
Yamilia Castillo Ramirez, two times gold medalist at the Youth Olympics and School Games in karate, during reading the oath of athletes, she ratified their commitment to do the best for winning as well as the respect for fellow athletes and referees.
Guantánamo in the last National School Games ranked 12, in the junior category had a positive balance in their results, as in such games, the 79 participating athletes managed to score 222 points and 9 sports rank the top five (four more than in 2013).
In school category it showed progress, given that the 258 participants in 23 of 32 sports that the 50th National School Games announced, the athletes achieved 43 medals (13 gold, 9 silver and 21 bronze) and 249 points to rank 12 (13, in 2013).
