On the night of April 11, 1895 the delegate of the Cuban Revolutionary Party José Martí was arriving in the country by Cajobabo Beach, in the Guantanamo municipality of Imías accompanied by Mayor General Máximo Gómez, Generals César Salas and Marcos del Rosario, Colonel Francisco Borrego and Captain Angel Guerra.

Martí was shown from exile his great skill as a politician and organizer of the struggle for independence and that even of the landing showed his sacrifice for the country to prevent on time with the independence of Cuba the expansion of the United States throughout the lands of America.
José Martí came to Cuba to join the independence war that began on 24 February 1895 after several setbacks such as La Fernadina and joined together Cubans outside and inside for such endeavor.
After Martí had wrritten in his diary: "We arrived at a pebble beach, La Playita (at the foot of Cajobabo). I stay in the boat the last emptying. I jumped, Great Happiness), staying at Guantanamo lands it’s collected his presence in the Cave of Juan Ramirez, which Máximo Gómez named it as "The Temple". The 2nd and first indoors camp where the expedition spent the night. The local farmers brought them sweet potatoes, chicken and pork. Next day they climbed Sao de Najesial, where Martí described the unspoilt nature of the area, and expressed "Climb sister hills, men."
The April 15 José Martí was appointed Major General of the Liberation Army in the Rancho de Tavera, that time in his notes described it: "Gomez at the foot of the mountain, on the shaded trail of bananas plantation, with stream below, tell me, beautiful and softened, apart from the recognized me as the Delegate, the Liberation Army, by him, the leader, elected in the council of chiefs, appoints me as Major General. I hold him they all hold me.... "
The home of the Pinedas was another place where the Patriots stayed, while in Palmarito he enjoyed the beautiful landscapes and took notes on the flora of the place: "cimmarón coffee plant, hoya, pomarrosa, cupey, paguá and royal palm. He really enjoyed the beauty of the Cuban landscape.
The Spaniards pursued the expedition in Pazarzo, Palenque, where hunger forces them to feed themselves with sugarcane, they reached Madre Vieja, where they received the news of the death of Flor Crombet and Antonio Maceo was wounded by the betrayal of Garrido and his men. Sadness enveloped them, they hardly eat.
In Los Cigüatos, Yuraguana, Malabé and Ináguabana José Martí continued to writing letters, documents and notes in his diary campaign until reaching Vuelta Corta, last camp in the region of Guantánamo, they left from here on May 1, 1895. Here they received from the Pedro Agustín Pérez’ wife the first Cuban flag raised until the end of the war.
Each April 11, Guantanamo people representing all Cubans recalled the most important event of this eastern territory and go on pilgrimage to the monument located in Cajobabo Beach, site of the historic event
