The March and April downpours are not sufficient for the recovery of Guantanamo´s reservoirs storing only 31.85 percent of their capacity, according to information of the National Institute of Water Resources in the territory.
La Yaya dam, the province's largest reservoir with a total capacity of 160 million cubic meters, is in critical situation, accounting for only 14 percent of its possibilities, affecting the development of agricultural production in the municipality of Niceto Pérez.
This reservoir supplies water to more than 75,000 inhabitants in the southern part of Guantanamo city and rural communities such as Uyao Nuevo, Uyao viejo, Cumberland, Malabé, Mártires de la Gloria and the municipality of Caimanera, places where the cycles are extended or pines are used.
In the face of forecasts predicting the decline in rainfall in the wet period, measures are adopted in order to guarantee the water service to the population aimed at the efficient use of infrastructure, with special emphasis on leaks reduction.
Likewise, it is intensified the need of rational use of water in the productive and social entities considered high consumers and the residential area, as well as the development of projects for the construction of new conductors and the installation of desalination plants for the sea water.
