More than 50 medals won in the competitions of knowledge in the prioritized subjects as well as the prizes obtained in the national competitions Sabe Más Quién Lee Más (Know More Who Read More), Leer a Martí (Read to Martí) and other recognitions at country level, are among the achievements that the affiliates of the union of Education, Science and Sport (SNTECD) in Guantánamo, will show next May 1st.
The national scientific research awards of the Guantanamo University are also part of the progress of this union that groups in the province about 29 000 members.
A few days before the celebration of International Workers' Day in Cuba, we spoke with Vilma Hamilton Asencio, secretary general of the SNTECD in the territory.
What other achievements do the Guantanamo teachers, athletes and scientists have on this May Day?
“The greatest satisfaction is that in a short time more than 280 schools that were damaged in the municipalities of Maisi, Baracoa, San Antonio del Sur and Yateras, only six of them have to be finished in August.”
“Also in this stage 10 schools of special, primary and pre-university education of the territory are awarded with the distinction Colectivos Martianos and La Estrella Martiana was bestowed to outstanding people and institutions, who promote the legacy of José Martí that demonstrates the outstanding work in the student formation."
"Also in the sphere of the Sport the women’s basketball team of Guantánamo is the current champion of the National Basketball League."
"We also arrived at the May Day event with a more consolidated and efficient work in university education from the external evaluation process, which makes it possible to progress in curricula and in the application of science and technology."
"In addition, the favorable results of the province in the accomplishment of the entrance exams to the Higher Education in previous academic years and the performance of the students of the School of Initiation Sport in the provincial and national school games."
What are the main activities that educators develop to celebrate May Day?
"Among the most significant is the delivery of the José Tey medal to more than 300 families that turn their homes into classrooms, following the passing of Hurricane Mathew in the four affected municipalities of this eastern region of Cuba. Raúl Gómez García and the 55th anniversary medal of the Science and Sports Education Union were also awarded, and the Rafael María de Mendive award, granted by the State Council, to educators with 20, 25 and 30 years of uninterrupted work in the sector."
Initiatives and order to show during themarch?
"As each year we will gather from five o'clock on Paseo between Cuartel and San Lino and the parade will be started by a group of young teachers, who will carry banner with the motto of the parade, and we will also be dressed in red and white and some literacy teachers will carry reproductions of the lantern that accompanied them during the campaign, followed by another group of teachers who will carry 55 Cuban flags to mark the number of years when the Union of Education, Science and Sport was created in Cuba."
In Cuba education is for everyone and the more than 29,000 Guantanamo educators will continue to defend the right to have a free and quality education, a model for other countries of the world; enough reasons to attend very early the May Day parade.
