With the production of about 15 thousand tons of tomato, valid to exceed the cold season to 166 percent and achieve the largest harvest in recent years, the farmers of Guantanamo province celebrate their day this May 17.
They also fulfilled commitments in the milk collection so far this year, the delivery of food, vegetables and grains, despite the limitations imposed by the drought and the aftermath of Hurricane Mathew.
In this sense, they are advancing in the recovery of the affectations left by the powerful cyclone in crops that are decisive for the economy of the province such as coffee, cocoa and coconut.
The more than 21,000 members of the National Association of Small Farmers also celebrate the 66th anniversary of the founding of the peasant organization with an increase in the role of women and young people in grassroots organizations.
The peasant cooperative sector currently represents more than 80 percent of agricultural production in Guantanamo province and reaffirms the commitment made to Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz to produce food for the people.
