The rich water system, climatic variability and the Guantanamo complex geology motivate specialists in the province to carry out Hazards Vulnerabilities and Risks Studies, in order to protect humans and property of the economy against natural disasters and other menace.
The incidence of landslides, earthquakes and drought, coupled with the effects caused by gust of winds and flood-prone areas due to heavy rains and sea penetration, are the main topics analyzed by the specialists.
Dianet Correoso Alcolea, general coordinator of the research, explains that studies are developed under the protection of Directive One of the Civil Defense and one of its strengths is the existence of risk management centers in eight of the ten municipalities and warning focal points in the entire province.
She said that the results produces information about the housing status of Guantanamo, vulnerable areas and other important information to assess the extent of damage before climatic phenomena, gas leak, fuel spill, among other cases.
Correoso, who is an expert of the Center for Risk Management in Guantanamo, underlines the importance of using Hazard Vulnerabilities and Risks Studies in the strategic, economic and social development of the province, to avoid human, physical and economic losses from natural disaster.
