During the visit, she exchanged with authorities, producers and inhabitants of the San Antonio del Sur, Imías and Maisí municipalities, where she insisted on the need to obtain an effective forecast in order to produce more food, vegetables, grains and fruits in view of this phenomenon that intensifies every day.
Laura Melo said that the WFP runs several projects in Guantanamo and works on the diagnosis and prevention of the effects it has on health, lack of food and poor water quality, as well as other consequences of drought in the population.
In recent years, Cuba has undergone changes and climatic anomalies which are damaging mainly to this eastern region of the country, which has intensified considerably since 1991 causing extension of drought cycles and shorter the rainy season.
The representative of the World Food Program in Cuba pointed out that problems with desertification and drought in communities along the southern coastal strip of Guantanamo Province also affect surface and underground hydrological networks, deteriorate crops, soil and influence the decline food production.
