The municipality of Baracoa is one of the localities prioritized in the State Plan for the confrontation to the climatic change, called Tarea Vida, presented in Guantanamo by Elba Rosa Pérez Montoya, minister of Science, Technology and Environment.
The head of the branch said that being near the Mayaguana Pass, the Baracoa territory is always exposed to impacts of the waves and is prone to coastal flooding due to incursion of sea, coupled with disturbances due to flooding of rivers and extreme weather events.
The sources of pollution, the dumping of wastes on the coast, the damage to the vegetation of this area and the erosion of sandy beaches and thugs like the river Miel. are other vulnerabilities identified.
This situation implies actions in the bay, the coast, the beaches and the city with deadlines ranging from 2020 to 2100 and from the experience left by Hurricane Mathew that validated the models of possible affectations in this eastern Cuban city, said Elba Rosa Pérez, Minister of Science, Technology and Environment.
The minister also explained that due to the status of island state, the most notorious impacts of climate change in Cuba are on rising sea levels that will increase by 27 centimeters by 2050 and endanger more than 500 settlements.
The 37 percent reduction in the availability of water potential, increased drought, salinization of underground soils and aquifers, and the retreat of the coast line are some of the threats of climate change in Cuba.
Cuba's science minister, Elba Rosa Pérez Montoya, said that the country faces these challenges with the legacy of Fidel Castro, who warned of the dangers of human species at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 and in other occasions.
