The Guantanamo family, Mendez, belonging to the Jamaica community in Manuel Tames municipality, received the 2017 Barrio Award, a distinction given by the Revolutionary Defense Committee (CDR) on occasion of 91st birthday anniversary of Fidel Castro.
Endorsed by its dedication to cultural spirituality and the patriotic formation of her neighborhood through the project "Mi barrio mi vida", the Mendez were the sixth family that this year deserved the recognition of the largest mass organization in Cuba.
Formed by a generation of combatants who fought during the government of Fulgencio Batista, deputies to the National Parliament, cultural promoters, internationalists, consecrated blood donors, communist party members and neighborhood leaders, the Mendez family is composed of the total of 36 groups, families and CDR members that received the 2017 Barrio Award.
Every year, many families are nominated by the grassroots organizations for this Award of the Neighborhood in the country, where this distinction has recognized for more than two decades the merits and contributions of those selected in support of the work of the CDR in favor of the welfare of community.
