During the commemoration of the Federation of Cuban Women's (FMC) 57th anniversary, yesterday August 23 in Camagüey, thousands of women, in the name of all members across the country, reaffirmed their commitment to the homeland and determination to continue the struggle to build a prosperous sustainable society.

Gathered in the historic Plaza de San Juan de Dios, Federation members concurred that the defense of the socialist homeland is the organization's main task, the only way to ensure greater opportunities for women.

"Just imagine that Cuban girls can attend an art school and become a prima ballerina like I did, without any wealth at all, with only the vocation and values learned from my family and teachers" stated Lizandra Gómez de la Torre, delegate to the upcoming World Festival of Youth and Students,

Oralys Pérez Rivero, vice president of the Francisco Borrero Labadí cooperative, added, "I am the daughter and granddaughter of campesinos, and I live proud of this country, its people, its land - mine, the most beautiful. I feel that I am a fortunate woman, because my children have a bright future, with equal opportunity and rights."

Presenting the event's central remarks was Political Bureau member Martha Ayala Ávila, also deputy director of the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center, who spoke of the main challenges facing the organization, saying, "These times require commitment and passion from every Federation member, intent upon realizing the dreams of Vilma to create a broader, more inclusive FMC that contributes to the solution of social problems and beats within the heart of the community."

Likewise referring to these challenges, FMC General Secretary and Political Bureau member Teresa Amarelle Boué insisted on the need to consolidate work in neighborhoods, and called on women to be involved in important upcoming events, especially the opening of school and nominations of People's Power candidates set to take place in September.

During the event, Camagüey was recognized as the FMC's vanguard province this year; Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Las Tunas, as outstanding; while Pinar del Río and Guantánamo received honorable mentions for their work.
