    Guantanamo Adopt Measures for the Possible Passing of Hurricane Irma

    Denny Legrá Azhares, president of the Provincial Defense Council, urged in Guantanamo to streamline clean-up actions and adopt measures in order to guarantee a rational and orderly evacuation of the vulnerable population, mainly in family homes and in accordance with the path and  evolution of Hurricane Irma.

    During a meeting of the defense body, the member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, examined the measures adopted for the protection of people, property of the economy and guarantee the vitality of electric service, health and communications, in the face of possible damage caused for the passing of the fourth hurricane of the current hurricane season.

    Carlos Román González, director of the Provincial Meteorological Center, said that Irma may be the most intense hurricane of the last hundred years in the Atlantic, with powerful destructive conditions capable of generating intrusion of the sea in the Cuban north coast and in vulnerable territories such as Baracoa.

    The defense councils of that municipality, Imías, San Antonio, and Maisí have radio amateurs who will maintain the communications with the provincial instance in case of damage in the traditional information system.

    The authorities detailed that food and other resources are being transferred to Baracoa and will be also distributed in Maisí, where measures are also adapted to preserve restored units after the passage of Mathew and new construction works including a tourist facility in Punta de Maisí.

    Nancy Acosta Hernández, vice president of the Provincial Defense Council, said that it was ordered the sale of fuel and the immediate distribution in the market network products such as chicken, egg, sausage, rice, beans, and crackers.

    Finally, authorities of the Guantanamo Defense Council advise the population to maintain informed about the history and evolution of Hurricane Irma, to carry out hygienic epidemiological surveillance and to comply with the guidelines of that body for the task of dealing with natural phenomena.
