Preserving people´s lives and the goods of economy is the main objective of the measures taken in Guantanamo in the face of Hurricane Irma's sweeping passage through the Caribbean, where it caused big damage in the British Virgin Islands and Antigua and Barbuda.

Faced with the potential impact of this hurricane, Guantanamo Civil Defense provides for preventive and organizational measures, based on the experiences left by Hurricane Mathew that affected the municipalities of Maisí, Baracoa, Imías, San Antonio del Sur and Yateras.

In this eastern territory the effects are foreseen in the municipality of Baracoa whose geography has a score of rivers, more than 80 kilometers of coast and about 14 covered by beaches, a scenario conducive to sea intrusions and floods.

According to this situation, it is prioritized the evacuation of people in relatives´ and friends´ homes and shelters, although other shelters like caves and tunnels are available, especially in the case of Maisí municipality.

In Baracoa, the water resources network distributes the liquid, trade and gastronomic units extend their service hours, the food industry produces bread, crackers and other dry foods, while agriculture harvests crops in the harvest and cattle are moved to high ground.

In addition, they protect the lives of tourists and the fifty Venezuelans who work in the reconstruction of the bridge over the Toa River, the largest tributary in the country.

Up to that coastal municipality, six tons of powdered milk, five of sugar, resources such as 122 thousand blocks, cement, electricity poles and boxes of purified water, as well as radio amateurs, brigades of the electric company and telecommunications were already transferred.

Solidarity and disposition is the environment in the streets of the First Villa in Cuba where the population works in the cleaning, tree pruning, protection of household goods and light covers, many of them recently acquired after the ravages of the previous phenomenon.

According to the National Meteorological Institute's forecast, the gradual deterioration of the weather in the southern part of Guantánamo will begin to be felt from the early hours of Thursday night. Up to this moment the day passes calmly and the Guantanamo residents remain prepared and alert.
