José Ramón Machado Ventura, second secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, visited yesterday the Department of Health of Frank País Second Eastern Front, located in Majimiana, El Salvador Municipality, which he managed 60 years ago as Medical captain of the Rebel Army.
While touring the places, he narrated passages of the war led by the bearded rebels, under the command of Fidel Castro, against the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista and described the abuses to which the peasants of the hard-to-reach- Guantanamo area were subjected and the poverty of the country.
In exchange with workers of the historic building and residents of the community, the member of the Political Bureau recalled that the Revolution transformed and dignified the lives of Cubans, who must continue to promote the development of this great work, created by the legendary Commander in Chief.
"Many people would like the progress to be faster, but the imperial blockade and other phenomena, among them the natural ones, hinder that purpose," said Machado, who cited Hurricane Irma, whose damages amounted to more than 13 billion pesos, half of them in Cuban Convertible pesos, that can be only recovered by time and the effort of Cubans•
Accompanied by Denny Legrá Azahares, member of the Central Committee of the Party and its first secretary in the province, and Nancy Acosta Hernández, president of the Government to that instance, the vice president of the Councils of State and Ministers also noted the progressive recovery of production of sugar after the damages caused by the persistent rains of the first months of the year.
In the sugar mill Argeo Martinez, the only one of the province that has been involved in the harvest for several years, was informed by Violeta Mesa Castillo, manager of the Guantanamo Sugar Company, about the start of the special campaign “Por un gran Marzo”, aimed at achieving high and stable milling to increase production.
"The first day of the aforementioned incentive movement, the mill crushed 37 tons over the 200 planned, with efficiency, rhythm that must be maintained in the future," said the director, who assured the existence of conditions in the producing units and the industry to overachieve the redesigned plan and exceed the volume of the last harvest.
Next, Machado Ventura visited the General Hospital Doctor Agostinho Neto, the largest health care center in the province, where he was interested in the different services provided by the facility, recently benefited with a state-of-the-art tomograph.
When talking with managers and workers of the hospital, the vice president of the Councils of State and Ministers urged the most effective use of disposable materials, expensive in the international market, without affecting the quality of patient care.
"Saving these resources is an effective way to sustain first world medical services, free for the population, in a poor country like Cuba," he said.
