Workers of the pavement brigade of the Abilio Fragoso contingent are working on the improvement of a 2, 5- mile stretch, corresponding to the south path of the highway that connects Guantanamo with the province of Santiago de Cuba.
The tasks include patching, correction of bridge joints and stretch paving, located between the 13th and 16th kilometers of that road of national interest, said Jesus Santamaría Llamos, executor of work in the mentioned group.
So far, "Santamaría Llamos said," we have located some 1,500 tons of asphalt mix, of the four thousand planned, a task that has been limited by the lack of aggregate in Guantanamo.
The existence of points with differential settlement (shallows) and cracks in the asphalt, caused by years of operation of the road, made this section one of the most affected of the road, said Francisco Hernández Guibert, deputy director of the Provincial Road Center.
The deplorable situation of the roads, especially the mountain, constitutes one of the most pressing problems in this eastern territory, hence any action in favor of these works acquires great importance.
In the province, next to the section of the highway, at the moment works are being done in other roads of national interest, such as Guantánamo -Yateras (punctually in La Carolina) and Jamal-La Tinta-Cantillo.
The repair of last road is in charge of the road brigade of the Agroforestry Company and Coco Baracoa, which runs the Jamal-La Tinta route, and of a group of the Guantánamo Mountain Base Business Unit, pertaining to the Company.
