Sessions at Guantanamo Environmental Science Forum

suelo area 320x191The sustainable management of lands, work in protected areas, environmental education and the impact of climate change on nature and people's lives, centered the agenda of this May 30 in the second extensive environmental scientific forum in Guantánamo until the 1st of June.

 

At the opening speech, the MSc. Loexis Rodríguez Montoya, referred the impact of climate change on agriculture, a sector that is very affected by the prevailing drought in the arid southern coastal strip.

Other experiences related to the prevention of disaster risk in the historic center of the city of Guantanamo in case of strong winds or the occurrence of earthquakes, a phenomenon that was also approached by the geologist Liuska Fernández Diéguez who spoke about the soils susceptible to earthquakes and earthquake-resistant constructions.

The researchers also exchanged about the projections of the Camagüey Province in the use of biomass to generate electricity free of fossil fuels, in line with the national purposes of transforming the country's energy source.

On its second day of sessions, the Environmental Scientific Forum includes several conferences related to the main issues of the event, while on June 1st, scientists foresees a technical visit to the Baracoa Municipality where they will learn about the implementation of the Tarea Vida Program, among other issues.
