New irrigation systems delivered to Guantanamo farmers by the World Food Program (WFP).
"The equipment, consisting of pipes, motor pumps and turbines, will allow the increase of the bean crop per hectare and strengthen its production chain, which will contribute to the substitution of imports in the agricultural sector," Norberto Roll, representative of PMA in Guantánamo, told the press.
More than a hundred producers in the territory benefit from these systems acquired with funding from the Government of Canada that are included in the actions developed by that UN agency to guarantee the food and nutritional security of vulnerable groups on the island.
According to the statements of Roll, the acquisition by the province's agricultural sector of these new equipment will enable the irrigation of some 500 hectares for the cultivation of the grass that will be in a greater yield of grain per hectare for the benefit of local people.
The Country Program project for food and nutrition security in Cuba aims to support local governments to achieve greater food and nutrition security, taking into consideration the priorities of the nation and the Guidelines for Economic and Social Policy of the Party and the Revolution in matters of food security.
More than 900 thousand people, from 43 municipalities of the five eastern provinces, Matanzas and Pinar del Río, currently benefit from the results of the application of this initiative, according to official reports.
