The capital repair of the Plaza del Mercado, a property erected in 1921 under the aegis of the famous architect José Lecticio Salcines, is at 20 percent completion, said Katiuska Saburén, principal specialist in the productive area of the Provincial Construction Enterprise.
Some forty men of the Guantanamo Base Business Unit work in two of the four sale areas foreseen in the project, in the completion of the kiosks and the reinforcement of original beams and columns in one of these areas and the construction of new sale areas in the second.
They also work on the restoration of the facade of eclectic style that includes several stone decorations and the three sculptural sets inspired by Greco-Roman mythology and made by the Spanish master builder José María Cantalapiedra.
Meanwhile, a cement mixture was applied in one of the remaining sections of the roof that was waterproofed, and it is planned to demolish a second slab seriously damaged by the leaks after the collapse of the original systems for rainwater drainage.
Finally the enterprise's board of directors explained that they have guaranteed the technology, trained personnel and the necessary materials for the execution of the work, which began in February and the completion date is scheduled for December 2019.
