New Bishop Takes Possession of the Diocese of Guantanamo-Baracoa

New Bishop in Guantanamo catholic church, Monsignor Silvano Pedroso MontalvoThe inauguration of the new Bishop of the Diocese of Guantanamo-Baracoa, Monsignor Silvano Pedroso Montalvo, took place at Santa Catalina de Ricci Cathedral of Guantanamo.

It was attended by the Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See, Archbishop Giorgio Lingua, bishops of all Cuban provinces and other representatives of the Catholic Church in Cuba.

 

Also were present the deputy chief of the Office of Religious Affairs of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party, Carlos Samper, along with other leaders of the PCC and the Government in the province.

Bishop Silvano is the third Bishop of this Diocese, whose creation was announced by Pope John Paul II, in 1998, during his visit to the island, when it was reaffirmed, in addition, Santa Catalina de Ricci as the patron of it .

The Cathedral of Guantanamo, where the inauguration took place, was built between 1836 and 1842 in the surroundings of the city park, center of the socio-cultural life of this city, capital of the easternmost province of Cuba.
