With financing from the European Union, the initiative called “Ponte Alerta Caribe” (Caribbean on Alert) includes actions in the San Antonio del Sur and Baracoa municipalities to consolidate the early warning system for drought and extreme hydro-meteorological events, respectively.

Ricardo Delgado Téllez, coordinator of the project, said the initiative promotes community participation from the genre and a particular look at disabled people who live in vulnerable areas.

The international project Ponte Alerta Caribe includes, among the actions, the installation in Baracoa of a tide gauge with instantaneous transmission of data that is a valuable assistance to the tsunami warning system in the country and the region, as well as a contribution to the information obtained in the 20 seismological stations existing in Cuba.

Promoted by a consortium of five non-governmental organizations led by Oxfam, the project brings together in Cuba Civil Defense, GeoCuba and several institutions of the Ministry of Science, which will share their experience with researchers from the Dominican Republic and then establish a common agenda through the Caribbean Disaster and Emergency Management Agency, CEDEMA.
