Specialists of the Science and Technical Unit attached to the Provincial Directorate of Soils in Guantanamo, created a multimedia that aims to perfect the knowledge and application of the Cuban Standard (NC) 776: 2010, aimed at evaluating the quality of the soils affected by salinity
The digital tool is an important consultation methodology for technicians and experts of the agricultural sector throughout the country, which provides updated terms and definitions for the study of salinity and sodicity (accumulation of salts with high content of sodium ion), phenomena that negatively affects plant growth and soil structure.
Designed by Marianela Cintra Arencibia, assistant researcher, and Raysa González Villaverde, specialist in IT, the software is characterized by interactivity with users and accessibility from any means of computing, since its database was designed with the use of Microsoft programs Access 2010, contained within the Microsoft Office package, and Visual Basic for Applications 7.0.
It also contains a form and six tables that allow the user to enter information based on the international system of units, and displays buttons for access to references, regulations, specifications, reports, results reports, ratings, presentations, bibliographies and a image gallery.
Nearly 26 thousand hectares of arable land are affected by salinity in the province, especially in the southern coastal strip and the Guantanamo Valley, a problem that gets worse because of drought, since the salt present in the water table is deposited in the first 20 centimeters of the soil, where the plowing is carried out in agricultural work.
