More than 27 percent of the Guantanamo population smokes, a practice representing the main risk factor associated with cancer mortality rate and other diseases in the territory, so during the current month the Provincial Department of Health Promotion calls for an anti- smoking campaign.
During the period the quit of this harmful habit will be promoted through activities in work and educational centers called to be declared smoke-free spaces, the main strategy to reduce the beginning of young people and adolescents as smokers.
A peculiarity of the Provincial Anti- smocking Campaign in Guantanamo this year is the possibility of creating the Voto por no fumar (I choose not to smock) Detachment, a group to boost the decision to quitting smoking in neighborhoods, schools and work places and will turn its members into voluntary promoters.
With this goal also the provincial contest on art and photography, whose awards will be presented at the José Martí Central Park.
The World No Tobacco Day is celebrated every year on May 31, an opportunity to increase training about the dangers of smoking, extending the support to people undergoing treatment and urge families to maintain healthy activities.
