The advance of the State Plan (Life Task) for the confrontation to climate change underway at good pace in Guantanamo, according to the authorities of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment in the province, an entity that recognizes among the organisms highlighted to the Soil Institute of the territory.
This scientific unit achieves advances in the development of studies of the areas of crops, inactive areas and those dedicated to other economic tasks, as well as research in terms of the promotion of sustainable use and conservation of the natural resource land in this locality possessing 10 types of soils.
Marianela Cintra Arencibia, director of the center, states that with this purpose, specialists of the entity participate in 10 research projects related to the control of degradation processes, fertilization, the study of substrates and the use of agroecological techniques.
She also reported that three of these initiatives are directed by the institution and highlighted among these the one aimed at the preparation of organic materials for the use of natural fertilizers in the plantations and the project related to the systematic control of salinity, which provides a technical instruction for the monitoring of the agro-ecosystems affected by this phenomenon taking into account the elements of soil in all its component.
The researcher Marianela Cintra Arencibia pointed out that the constant fluctuations of the climate imply an extreme vigilance in the adequate use of soils, as the only guarantee for the preservation of that natural element, and therefore, for food security.
In this regard, she highlighted the role of the Guantanamo Soils Institute in the analysis of more than 3 thousand hectares through the Agrochemical Service for the rational application of chemical fertilizers, the studies to 9 of the 15 areas included in the Life Task Program in the Baracoa Municipality and also the detailed schemes of soil conservation to be implemented in each one.
Another relevant result of the center is the production of biofertilizers Risovio, phosphorin and asotobacter, initiative of positive impact both in the environment and in the economic field due to its proven efficacy and efficiency, besides being commercialized at reasonable prices between 15 and 18 pesos per kilogram.
During 2018, the Guantanamo Soils Institute has won the Provincial Environmental Award and the Science, Technology and Innovation Prize, among other awards that support the selfless work of its specialists in pursuit of sustainable development in the province.
