The Destinations of Cuba Embroidered in the Law

The Fatherland beat on that April 10th on occasion of the Mambises’ Constitution, as today, the day of 2019 chosen to proclaim the new Magna Carta that will govern the destinies of all Cubans.

A handmade text, embroidered the words with the certainties of the things that urge, with the here and now, but without forgetting the risky strokes of those who dream, and want, and fight for tomorrow.

A handmade text, the 600 deputies to the Cuban Parliament firstly said, who analyzed it again and again taking into account the national interests. They took care of every word, every comma, every sense as best they could.

And then, for the more than eight million citizens that in neighborhoods or in the midst of the routines of work and study, they sat down to debate what was written and what included their opinions, and contributed some 700 thousand proposals.

Those who looked for the paper gazette, those who carefully analyzed it as a family, those who stressed the additions, the comments, those who said put here, remove there, as they believed in that supreme exercise of democracy from citizenship.

And, finally, for the more than 6 million 800 thousand Cubans that we ratify in a referendum. Those of us who went out to vote even though all our feelings were not there, because we understood that a Constitution is bigger than the self, and that it exists to serve us.

The text written that moved consciences and feelings. That brought out the best in our citizens, dusted prejudices, put thought and posture to the simplest people, who left no one untouched.

Because the election process does not leave for posterity only a text superior in all respects to the 1976 Constitution. With more rights, with openings for a prosperous future, with the recognition of new forms of property, with the content of political will to face discrimination, violence ...

It also gives lessons on how people think, what want, their concerns and indignation, what Cubans aspire to. And it is an incalculable capital for the decisions to be made in the future.

There is also the certainty of a people who renewed their votes with the project of the country we built, at a time when pacts and consensus seem to be out of fashion. In a time when absenteeism wins the elections of half the world, with the recognizable sign of disenchantment.

But also the need to recognize, understand and add those who, for whatever reasons, said no.

And above all, the future remains. What we will do with this written law that should generate changes beyond the role of the gazette, the laws that will be signed in the coming months and that must ratify the climate of respect for the legality and dignity of the human being as a whole, contained in the new constitution of the Republic of Cuba.
