The state plan for confronting climate change known as the Life Task mobilizes the scientific community in Guantanamo, which together with 38 entities, is committed to finding solutions with a comprehensive approach to protect ecosystems and preserve human life.
This project, headed by the Provincial Government body, carries out 196 actions this year in which sanitation works are prioritized to decontaminate the bays of Guantánamo, Baracoa and its coastlines, in addition to the work aimed at reducing vulnerabilities in cities, beaches and serving the semi-arid zones affected by the drought.
Among the priorities also stands out the recovery of the tibaracones, which constitute cumulative bars of gray sand between the sea and the land and represent an exclusive geological accident of the north-east coast of Cuba. Its recovery is essential to preserve this natural barrier that protects the Baracoa City from the intrusion of the sea, a meteorological phenomenon that is increased by the effects of climate change.
To achieve satisfactory results in the task of the Life Task, the delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment trains the local governments, entities and organizations involved, in correspondence with the environmental risks in each territory.
According to their responsibilities and competences, the different actors in this endeavor have their role to carry out the planned actions.
As part of the Life Task strategies, experts evaluate the vulnerabilities of buildings near the sea and rivers, the dumping of hazardous waste and coastal pollution, among other negative phenomena. From this analysis actions in the province are focused, mainly during this first stage, in the Baracoa Municipality.
Likewise, the drainage of areas aimed at agricultural work, the establishment of nurseries for the cultivation of cocoa, coffee and coconut, together with the reforestation of the mangroves and the agroecological practices, among other actions, motivate the scientific community in Guantanamo and the agencies involved to join effort in order to counteract the effects of climate change.
