For its part, the Engineer Gleidy Guilarte, with the help of other producers, recovered an area of semi-protected crops in the collective use farm and turned it into a nursery to produce high quality seeds with agroecological practices.
These initiatives are examples of the response of the Guantanamo farmers to the restrictions caused by the hostile policy of the United States to Cuba, which especially affects food production.
This was stated by the member of the Luis Rustán Credit and Services Cooperative, during the Balance Assembly corresponding to the organic process of the Twelfth Congress of the National Association of Small Farmers.
At the meeting, Toni Matos Romero, the first secretary of the Communist Party in the Guantanamo Municipality, acknowledged the profound debate about the importance of the operation of the grassroots organization, to promote programs such as territorial self-supply and solve the problems affecting producers.
In this sense, José Francisco Sais Machado, delegate of Agriculture in the territory explained the demands of the authorities and this body for resolving at once the chain of defaults that upsets the economic development of cooperatives and affects the well-being of the farmers.
