Corneal refractive surgery with the use of excimer laser, it is one of the eye treatments that are performed in the Eye Center of Guantanamo, a high-cost surgery in developed countries and in the territory it ensures good vision of thirty people each month.
The excimer laser is a technology used to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, which are visual defects suffered by nearly 80 percent of the population between 20 and 60 years old, as it was reported by Yoasmy Creagh Armiñan, the head of the Ophthalmology Center in Dr. Agostinho Neto Hospital in this city.
Speaking to CMKS Radio Station, the specialist also stated that this service was halted in 2014 by total lack of a gaseous compound of argon and fluorine, necessary for the operation of the light which is used in the surgery and whose import is blockaded by U.S. government.
The interruption of the advanced technology affected surgical requirements as well as a large sector of the population hampering to improve their vision and appearance, since in most cases it eliminates the use of optical accessories as eyeglasses or contact lenses to correct refractive errors.
The rapid evolution of patients within 24 hours typically performed on an outpatient basis and the local use of anesthetic eye drops are advantages of this procedure, which all age groups in Guantanamo can have access after a specialized diagnosis at consultations in the Provincial Center.
