    Guantanamo Ready for the Coffee Harvest

    Guantanamo will provide a figure similar or higher than 8 466.3 tons of coffee grain during the harvest that begins officially next day 18 in Maisi, the municipality's largest producer of coffee grain in Cuba, according to statements by Caridad Piedra Perdomo, assistant representative for this task in the Delegation of Agriculture.

    That same figure was contributed by men and women, linked to the coffee crop in this eastern territory in different coffee plantations during the previous harvest.

    Piedra explained that 10 ecological pulping machines are being installed, adding now a total 30 of that type that will work in this harvest (the remaining 43 pulping machines will be installed until 2020), which allow saving water and eliminate pollution of the environment.

    She also mentioned replace of four husking mills of the five existing in the territory by other modern which also are polishers, as well as technological improvements in the processing plant “Asdrubal López,” all of which provide higher quality grain for export and domestic consumption.

    He added that the achievement of this purpose also contribute stimulants prices paid to producers for coffee quality: 161 pesos per tin Arabian, first, and 106.90 for Robusta, first.

    The assistant representative of Agriculture stressed that the coffee growers, for the first time, were given the opportunity to demand up to 32 inputs through the Logistics business group of the Ministry of Agriculture and that, unlike previous years, they have horseshoes, nails and rope to start the harvest.

    In that regard, she noted that rubber boots or batteries for transport (trucks and tractors), required by them, have not yet arrived at the province.

    She reported further that the Agriculture requested Education the incorporation  of 575000 students, which will be housed in 20 camps in the municipalities of Maisi, Yateras and El Salvador, during the four stages.
