On 27 October, the United Nations (UN) will vote again the draft resolution entitled Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States against Cuba.

Less than a month after that step occurs health workers at Guantanamo express their outrage at the damage to the people and confirm their commitment to safeguard the health of the Guantanamo

The Doctorate on Health Sciences and Professor Anselma Betancourt Pulsan on behalf of Scientific Circle of Health in the territory condemned  this inhumane measure.

From: Provincial Council of Scientific Societies of Health at Guantanamo

Beyond the establishment of diplomatic relations and the will expressed by both governments in a respectful and sincere dialogue, the economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba is still in force. In these more than five decades losses amount to a trillion dollars and that for an economy like ours it is outrageous.

This unjust measure is the main obstacle to our development, causing shortages and hardship to all the families of this island, because 77 percent of Cubans have been born and lived under inhuman effects of the blockade. It is palpable every time how the blockcade systematically violates human rights of Cubans.

In analyzing the impact on the health sector and in our patients the injury is extraordinary enough just thinking about our children and cancer patients receiving many hemolytic diseases incredible treatment from our Provincial Hospital but could be much better if the Department US Treasury (USA) shall not preclude the granting of licenses for radiation treatments and serums. Besides the difficulty in accessing contrast media for accurate diagnosis and treatment of serious diseases. And just to mention another example of the cruel effects of this ancient policy is that it prevents the acquisition of vaccines developed by research centers in the US, which forced accessed through third and fourth countries, most expensive transaction, difficult and its entry into Cuba is also hindered.

But despite the terrible consequences of health workers in Guantanamo, we have been able to provide quality health care to our people. The answer of this union is that we will continue working devotedly, ethically, and with that expressed exemplary solidarity that has characterized us for years with our sister nations of the world.

With this pronouncement Scientific Societies of Health in Guantanamo are demanding an end to this unjust policy and reiterated its position against the Cuban government and its commitment to work for the health of people with optimism, love of neighbor and under the Marti’s ideas to do It is the best way to tell.

The economic blockade imposed on Cuba by the United States government has affected over five decades the health and lives of Cubans, especially the most sensitive population groups: children, pregnant women, the elderly and the sick people. This qualified by international authorities and civil society of genocidal practice is also condemned by health workers in Guantanamo.
