Bolivian President Assures Scientific Development in the Hands of the Young

The Bolivian scientific development is in the hands of young professionals like yourselves, said President Evo Morales at the opening today of the First Congress of Bolivian scientists living abroad taking place in Cochabamba. 'Our country, through the social movements, the people in general, got its political and economic liberation. Now we need to get our science and technology released, and you, young professionals from Bolivia, have the possibility to help us achieve that goal', the president declared while inaugurating the event.

Now we need to get our science and technology released, and you, young professionals from Bolivia, have the possibility to help us achieve that goal', the president declared while inaugurating the event.

'Before, we were the poorest nation in South America, and thanks to the hard work of social movements we reached such stability and to be today the most prosperous country in the region', he added.

'If we have come this far, we must accelerate the scientific and technological liberation. If we have so many natural resources, how can we not achieve this purpose', the president asked.

'That is why together with Vicepresident Álvaro García Linera and our cabinet, we decided to convene this meeting and we hope you will help us to become independent scientifically', he stressed

According to the leader, in capitalism science and technology are used primarily for consumption, as a commodity, for the benefit of transnational, and in many cases to harm the environment and the Pacha Mama.

Morales announced a number of actions by the government as the creation of Scientific Olympics in schools, the building of a City of software and Science in Cochabamba, as well as the Nuclear Research Center in the city of El Alto in the capital .

The Head of State recalled that the country aims to become an energy center in the region and said that with their support, the development of this sector could be accelerated.

This Congress will end tomorrow after addressing different issues in six Working Tables.

These include health and drug industry, biodiversity, natural resources, environment, agricultural development and food technologies.

Others like energy and hydrocarbons, mining and metallurgy, industrial transformation, industrialization, information technology, communication and development of hardware and software will be discussed.

In each of the Working Tables will be involved authorities from different government ministries, who will help to establish the final agreement to be presented to the president.
