A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine revealed in its latest report new potential links between Zika and the increasing malformations in newborn.
The study is focused on the case of a pregnant woman who became infected with the virus and chose to abort the fetus after ultrasounds revealed signs of severe malformations.
The fetus' brain not only had a fraction of the normal side, but also had severe defects, said researchers.
The study, carried out by researchers from Slovenia, is accompanied by a report of US scientists who back those conclusions.
There is still neither a cure for the disease nor a vaccine to prevent it, but experimental studies could start within some months, said Michael Greene, from the General Hospital of Massachusetts, who along with other Harvard colleagues backed the discoveries in the study accompanying the report.
Thousands of pregnant women infected with the virus are waiting to deliver their babies to know their children defects.
Depending on the part of the brain attacked by the virus, there will speaking and vision defects, or problems in the motor or intellectual functions.
