The chairman and rapporteur of the impeachment committee of the Brazilian Senate will meet today with the president of the Supreme Federal Court (SFC) to decide on the next steps to be taken in the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff.
Raimundo Lira and Antonio Anastasia will attend the meeting with Minister Ricardo Lewandowski a week before the Senate resumes its sessions, in order to set the work schedule.
According to Lira, who was quoted by Agencia Senado, the fact that the especial committee will not meet until May 24 responds to a request by some Senators, who have traveled abroad on official missions.
Immediately after President Dilma Rousseff was removed from her post to be impeached, Lewandowski took over the presidency of the senatorial committee, whose composition (21 members and 21 substitutes) will not be modified.
In his first act, the minster of the Supreme Court signed a subpoena for Rousseff, thus opening a 20-day period for her to present her defense.
The impeachment will consist of two stages: in the first one, the preliminary investigation, evidence and testimonies will be submitted, and the defense's and the prosecutor's speeches will be made. Then, Rapporteur Anastasia should present a new view if the accusation of crime of responsibility is accepted or not.
The new version of the rapporteur's view will be submitted to the Senate's plenary to decide by a simple majority (41 votes) of its members whether the impeachment continues or it is filed.
