Chile will use renewable energy in its metro system from 2018, according to an ambitious plan highlighted by the President of the Republic, Michelle Bachelet. A visit to the works of Line 3 in what will be the National Stadium station allowed Bachelet to confirm the progress of the work.
It will be a step in business development but also in consciousness, in vision, she said, referring to two projects, the photovoltaic plant El Pelícano and the wind farm San Juan de Aceituno.
Therefore, the company that manages the metro will have prices below $ 100 per megawatt per hour.
Chilectra state company will provide 40 percent to the energy of the Metro, while El Pelicano will provide 42 percent and San Juan 18 percent.
A service that is always at the forefront, and makes us proud due to the capability to be pioneers in the world to offer the highest quality of public transport in our country, said the head of state.
In fact, the use of Non-Conventional Renewable Energy (URE) in the Metro de Santiago will be of a 60 percent, with solar and wind energy resources.
The two power plants, both private, will provide an investment of over 500 million, and only the construction of the photovoltaic power plant El Pelicano will allow creating 600 jobs for about a year.
Bachelet also commended the fact that the use of these sources will avoid the emission of 130,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere from 2018, equivalent to the average consumption of just over 100,000 homes.
