Cuba´s First Vice President Miguel Díaz-Canel concluded today an official visit to Japan, where he called to revitalize bilateral relations and cooperation.

Cuba´s First Vice President Miguel Díaz-Canel concluded today an official visit to Japan, where he called to revitalize bilateral relations and cooperation.

During his stay in the "Land of the Rising Sun", Díaz-Canel completed an intense agenda that included meetings with Japanese top government and parliament leaders, as well as representatives of important national companies in order to increase cooperation in the political, commercial and economic areas.

The Vice-President urged Tokyo to play an important role in Cuba´s economic and social development and stressed the traditional diplomatic ties that join the two nations since 1929.

Japan was Cuba´ s second trade partner in the 70´s and 80´s, he said, highlighting the prestige of Japanese businesses in Cuba due to their quality and efficiency.

"We have been doing a series of changes that would allow revitalizing our economy, the private sector has been given space to develop as a complement of the economy, and Cuban enterprises have been given more power to strengthen their efficiency", he told Prensa Latina.

He added that a foreign investment law has been approved, which gives guarantees to businesses and explained the creation of the Mariel´s special development zone, whose application has started to yield results.

"We want investments to grow by a 20 percent", he said.

Accompanied by Foreign Deputy Minister Rogelio Sierra and Cuban ambassador to Japan Marcos Rodríguez, Díaz-Canel said the new scenario has promoted the progress of relations between Tokyo and Havana, and urged to take advantage of the moment to increase commercial cooperation.

The Cuban Vice-President held talks with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Taro Aso and Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida separately.
