US President Barack Obama will pay an official visit to Spain from July 9 to 11, the Spanish Foreign Ministry said here Monday. While in Eastern Europe, first by a US president in 15 years, Obama will meet with King Felipe VI of Spain and President of the Spanish Government in office, Mariano Rajoy, said the Foreign Ministry in a statement.

The US President will arrive in Madrid from Poland, where he will participate in the summit of leaders of the Organization of the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO), to be held in Warsaw from July 7 to 9 .

The administration of Mariano Rajoy framed this visit "on the excellent bilateral relations in all fields between the United States and Spain", and stressed that it responds to the invitation of the King, according to the press release.

"Spain is one of our oldest and closest allies on issues ranging from defense and security of our citizens, to trade and investment," said in a separate statement the US Ambassador in Madrid, James Costos.

Obama's trip to the Iberian nation, an important NATO ally by the US, will occur two weeks after general elections.

The Spaniards will go to the polls again on June 26, after no political party managed to form a government after the elections last December 20, in the absence of agreement to govern in coalition.
