Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Delcy Rodriguez, called today for the immediate lifting of the U.S. blockade on Cuba, which she described as criminal.
'This is a requirement that the people of the world have made, that the criminal economic, commercial and financial blockade on Cuba should cease,' she told Prensa Latina.
According to the diplomat, Venezuela will support, on October 26th, the new draft of a resolution on the necessity of ending the blockade, which has been in force for more than 50 years - an initiative the UN General Assembly will vote on for the 25th occasion since 1992.
'We will undoubtedly be supporting it, because we will always be close to the Cuban people, who have resisted with dignity,' she said.
The Assembly, which brings together, on equal terms, the 193 members states of the UN, categorically demanded the lifting of the blockage last year with a vote of 191 out of the possible 193 votes. Only the United States and its ally Israel were opposed to the resolution.
Rodriguez denounced the impact of the unilateral U.S. sanctions on the Caribbean nation and the obstacle they represent for its development.
'Despite the blockade, Cuba is standing, and the Venezuelan people are on the side of the island,' said the foreign minister of the South American country, who yesterday met with Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, to monitor the situation of a territorial dispute with Guyana, for the Essequibo.
