The UN Security Council is holding an emergency meeting today to address the sixth nuclear test carried out by the Democratic People''s Republic of Korea (DPRK).

The meeting, which was convened by the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Japan and South Korea, could give new condemnations to North Korean tests, but also calls for the return to negotiations as the only viable option to reduce tensions on the Korean peninsula.

Pyongyang announced yesterday the successful execution of the test of a hydrogen bomb, designed to be placed in the charge of an intercontinental ballistic missile.

The DPRK insists on its right to defend itself against the U.S. hostility on the peninsula, where Washington maintains almost 40,000 troops and systematically carries out military maneuvers, which the Asian country describes as a threat of aggression.

The Council has established seven rounds of sanctions against North Korea, the most recent of which adopted one month ago, through resolution 2371, an initiative promoted by the United States to bring Pyongyang's trade and financial stranglehold to an unprecedented level.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres rejected yesterday the DPRK's nuclear test and called on its leaders to comply with the Council resolutions.

The North Korean government is unaware of the sanctions of the 15-member body, which it sees as a result of U.S. pressure.
