Cuba called today here for a comprehensive conception of sustainable development and to assume a relevant role by the parliaments worldwide to comply with the UN Millennium Goals.

Cuba called today here for a comprehensive conception of sustainable development and to assume a relevant role by the parliaments worldwide to comply with the UN Millennium Goals.

Cuban People's Power National Assembly vice president Ana Maria Mari Machado expressed that stance after speaking at the plenary session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union convened under the slogan "Turning words into action" as regards to the UN goals pending to be fulfilled.

Mari Machado stated that a process is required, so that policies on economic, scientific-technological, fiscal development, trade, energy, agriculture, industry and others are intertwined with the exigencies to protect environment and the sustainable use of natural resources, in a framework of justice and equity.

Hence, Cuba has granted great importance to those negotiations that at an inter-government level are aimed to the adoption of a new framework of development.

Referring that almost after concluding time to comply with the Millennium Summit goals in 2000, the legislator stressed that her country has significant achievements, when serious problems are persisting in the world, among them she mentioned that more than 1.2 billion people are living in extreme poverty.

Mari Machado stressed the relevant role corresponding to the legislators attending the holding of agreements in favor of sustainable development, not only ensuring laws that allow its implementation, but also controlling the governmental management.
